Communications: Method of delivering the message matters
Sometimes it is more effective to pick up the phone than to send an email. At times, an in-person meeting is the right choice. Always deliver bad news in person. Written commu-nication is best when there is straightforward information that needs to be conveyed accu-rately. Train people in your organization to use the right form of communication that is most appropriate, effective and not counter-productive.

Terry Gardiner is the founder and President of Silver Lining Seafoods and NorQuest Seafoods - a medium-size Alaska seafood processing company; and currently a Board member of the Anvil Corporation, an employee-owned company specializing in oil and gas engineering.
